CLIMATE ACTION

Our goal: 100% of our purchased electricity comes from renewable sources & 25% reduction of carbon emissions across our value chain by 2025.

Our Approach

We are building climate resilience by committing to transition our operations to 100% renewable electricity and reduce our GHG emissions by 25% across our value chain. Our strategy to reach this goal is based on additionality and proximity, adding additional capacity to the grid and identifying  solutions for each country.

We follow the global corporate renewable energy initiative RE100 guidelines with our renewable electricity sources coming from solar, biogas, and water. We also follow RE100 guidelines on energy generation, leveraging self-generated energy through either on-site installations or off-site PPAs.

Currently, we are generating biogas from our site wastewater treatment plants to run our dual boilers for steam generation, so as to reduce the use of fossil fuels like HFO.

We are in the process of scoping and installing onsite Solar plants  and Biomass CHP plants to generate electricity and steam. These have the potential to reach 100% Renewable Energy penetration.

Attain Zero waste operation

The company has in place ultra-modern Effluent Treatment Plants at all sites to ensure the brewery discharges clean water into the River Nile and River Rwizi. The process involves removing solids from the waste stream, restoring the pH balance of the water, converting organic material into biogas and sludge, disinfecting the waste water and then returning it to the river. We are able to use the biogas as fuel to power our brewery plants and the sludge is used as a fertiliser while yeast is used as feed for animals by local farmers.

In 2012, Nile Breweries Limited won the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) Award, as the best corporate in environment protection.
